Programs C.L.A. Staff Members: Administration

Lisa Crosby

Executive Director (Principal) and Founder
Lisa has twelve years of secondary teaching experience in the public school system, two years of college teaching experience, and holds the following four credentials in California and Nevada: K-8 Elementary Endorsement, Multiple Subject Mathematics (with Calculus), Physical Science (including Chemistry and Physics) and Literacy Specialist Credential for teaching students of all grades and teachers. She has supervised student teachers for Sierra Nevada College under Dr. Dave Mussatti for three semesters, and taught the Reading Methods class for new teachers, and taught at University of Nevada-Reno in the mathematics department. Lisa has also been on staff that saw the opening of two new high schools and understands the large task of opening a new school.

Lisa has taken on many leadership roles in her years of secondary teaching experience. She has participated on several textbook adoption committees and curriculum development committees. She has participated in the Mentor Teacher Program, curriculum alignment projects for the district, as well as a technology trainer. Lisa has also taken a leadership role with infusing creativity and technology into the development of the Probability, Statistics and Discrete Math curriculum in WCSD. Serving as the union building representative, she has been involved with mediating teacher and administration conflict resolution.

Lisa has experience with all levels of learners. For each of the twelve years of her public school experience, she has worked with at least one period of remedial students. She has been an innovator of effective programs for "at risk" students throughout her career. In 1995, she pioneered the GOLD program at Galena High School where at-risk students were placed in a blended English, Science, and Math program with considerable success. She pioneered the Math Credit Recovery at Spanish Springs High School in 2003/2004 and 2004/2005. Lisa has taught honors level math classes to upper level students and has enjoyed the challenging curriculum for the last ten years. Gifted students experience equal or greater academic stress in classes that under-challenge their abilities, and she has worked to create opportunities for students wto be allowed to excel at their own pace. At Spanish Springs her at-risk math lab revealed gifted students who took the class to accomplish expedited learning opportunities. CLA offers a platform where students of all levels can meet their academic potential. She is a rare teacher with multiple areas of expertise, uniquely qualifying her in the role of Executive Director of Custom Learning Academy, which she founded in 2005.

Lisa and her husband, Tim, have three sons, ages 20, 15 & 14. CLA was begun to serve her oldest son when he was in 9th grade to teach him math courses for credit, and he is now a junior in his Civil Engineering program in college. The investment in his math skills paid off! Her younger two sons learn all their academics at CLA while taking 2 classes at Truckee High School and participating in Truckee Football. They both have been able to accomplish above grade level curriculum levels, such as Algebra 2, and Biology in 9th grade. Both boys also are ahead in their foreign language curriculum (German 2 for the 9th grader and Spanish 3 for the 10th grader. This is because CLA students are able to earn high school foreign languagecredits beginning in middle school. The Crosby's enjoy spending time with their dog Baxter, downhill and cross country skiing, hiking, target shooting, boating and camping as a family.

Joanie Engel

SAT English Tutor, Registrar, K-12 Word Study Spelling Specialist,Elementary Language Arts and Math Teacher and Tutor
Joanie Engel grew up on the east coast and graduated from Stanford University in 1976 with a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology, specializing in early childhood. This training proved very valuable when she began her career in gymnastics club management; she developed her own brand of pre-school gymnastics programs in the Bay Area and at Lake Tahoe, taught and coached boys and girls ages 2-18 at every level, was certified as a women's judge in the Sacramento area from 1986-1992, and wrote a manual for teacher training. After the birth of their third child, Joanie and her husband Kurt returned to the Lake Tahoe area. Since all three children demonstrated a love and talent for ski racing, the Engels chose to homeschool in order to provide a flexible education schedule; Joanie was their teacher for 11 years and has seen her two older children gain college acceptance. Part of the Engel children's academic success is due to the fact that they were the very first math students at CLA! Seeing a need at the school, Joanie cleaned the facility voluntarily every week for four years; Lisa then placed Joanie in a teaching position where she continues to serve. Joanie's strengths lie in the Language Arts field, but having successfully completed Algebra 1 & 2 and Geometry at CLA under Mike Bensley has also equipped her to help students in those areas as well. skip
